PlusFour Solutions: Guidance through Assessment

Educational Assessment

When testing procedures are applied to school-related issues, it is often to assess learning style, strengths and weaknesses, and to rule out a potential learning disability. Testing for students with learning difficulties is often administered on a regular basis to provide an ongoing record of progress.

When children are changing schools, test data is often required to facilitate placement in the right program or classes. Many schools and programs require cognitive and achievement test data as part of their admissions process.

The goal at PlusFour Solutions is to tailor the assessment process to the unique needs relative to the child and his or her family. Dr. Steve Newton specializes in working with individuals of all ages, from elementary through graduate school. He utilizes the most current test instruments to assess students. Test instruments are chosen to be developmentally age appropriate. There is no “cookie-cutter” or generic process at PlusFour Solutions because no set of procedures fits all students. Assessments are tailored to the individual needs of each student and provide targeted data with which to make informed decisions and placements. The hallmark of a PlusFour assessment is the personal attention, time, and care put into each phase of the process.

Testing is accomplished in a quiet, stress-free environment and the test batteries are administered by Dr. Newton. Testing is often spread over several sessions, but can also be accomplished in one day in urgent or emergency circumstances. Home and school visits are conducted by Dr. Newton when evaluation of these environments is a necessary part of the assessment process. Every effort will be made to maximize the student’s experience.

Test data will be presented to parents and school professionals using the PlusFour Report System. This report style provides comprehensive test data in a report format that is widely recognized as the leader in written and digital presentations. While many psychological reports are little more than lists of test data with dry narrative, the PlusFour Report System utilizes cutting edge technology to present meaningful data with charts, graphs, digital photographs, and strategic use of color. The result is a useful report that is dynamic and highly informative.

Dr. Newton is skilled in the assessment of both language-based and non-verbal learning disabilities. He uses such instruments as the Wechsler Intelligence Scale for Children, Fourth Edition (WISC-IV), Woodcock-Johnson Cognitive or Achievement Battery (WJ III), Wechsler Individual Achievement Test (WIAT3), Kaufman Short Neuropsychological Assessment Procedure (K-SNAP), and the Kaufman Assessment Battery for Children (K-ABC); other tests of reading, memory, learning, and mathematics are used as necessary.

Dr. Newton is experienced in working with local schools and school districts. He attends IEP meetings, 504 strategy meetings, and Student Study Team (SST) meetings on a regular basis. Dr. Newton helps teachers and administrative staff understand test data and the special needs of the student. Dr. Newton will assist teachers and staff to design individualized procedures and accommodations for the student.
