Dr. Steve Newton
Dr. Newton is a licensed clinical psychologist who specializes in the testing of individuals across the age spectrum. He is a specialist in the evaluation and diagnosis of students.
Dr. Newton taught junior high and high school for the first ten years of his career. Dr. Newton returned to school and received a master’s degree in counseling from Santa Clara University and a doctorate in clinical psychology from the Fielding Graduate Institute.
Dr. Newton has been clinical director of two Bay Area Child and Adolescent Psychiatric units at Good Samaritan Hospital and Charter Hospital. On these inpatient units he gained experience with trauma, long term mental illness, critical care, outpatient treatment and substance abuse treatment. As both director and attending professional, Dr. Newton admitted, treated and discharged nearly one thousand hospital patients before committing to a full-time private practice.
Dr. Newton is also a forensic specialist working with both the family court system as well as criminal court. At any given time, Dr. Newton is evaluating several families at the order of a family court judge. These families are typically high conflict individuals who cannot agree on what is in their children’s best interests.
Dr. Newton, recently paralyzed from the waist down due to a fall while hiking, has been married forty years and has two grown daughters, one an elementary teacher, the other a registered nurse. He loves to garden, build furniture and reads voraciously. Known for combining a sensitive manner with absolute candor, he is frequently sought for second opinions by colleagues and as a speaker on issues related to children and adolescents.
